American Councils și Ministerul Educației din România au semnat un acord pentru continuarea programului FLEX în anul academic 2026-2027, promovând schimburile educaționale între tineri.

American Councils for International Education and Romania’s Commitment to FLEX Program

The American Councils for International Education has announced a significant new agreement with Romania’s Ministry of Education and Research aimed at supporting the Future Leaders Exchange (FLEX) program for the academic year 2026-2027. This partnership represents a crucial milestone in the ongoing educational collaboration between the United States and Romania, facilitating the continuation of FLEX, which is recognized as one of the most competitive high school exchange programs funded by the U.S. Department of State.

Romania joined the FLEX program a decade ago, and this collaboration is set to enhance its benefits by introducing a co-financing arrangement where the Romanian government will share the financial responsibilities for both Romanian and American participants. This initiative not only highlights Romania’s commitment to fostering educational opportunities but also emphasizes the importance of international exchange in shaping the leaders of tomorrow.

Since the program’s inception, over 18,000 participants from Romania have applied, showcasing a robust national enthusiasm for American study opportunities. Each selected Romanian student will have the chance to spend an entire academic year in the United States, living with an American host family and attending a local high school. This immersive experience allows students to learn about American culture firsthand while sharing their own Romanian heritage.

Furthermore, the FLEX Abroad component, which enables American students to study in Romania, was successfully launched in 2024. This addition further strengthens ties between the two countries, promoting cultural exchange and mutual understanding.

The signing ceremony for this new agreement was attended by high-ranking officials from both governments, including Daniel-Ovidiu David, the Minister of Education in Romania, and Stefanie Williams from the U.S. Department of State. During the event, leaders highlighted the importance of the agreement for youth development and its role in bolstering bilateral relations. They discussed how programs like FLEX not only provide transformational opportunities for students but also serve as a bridge between cultures, fostering lasting relationships.

For interested students, the application deadline for Romanian participants is set for December 18, 2025. Similarly, American students looking to participate in the FLEX Abroad program have until December 8, 2025, to submit their applications. This timeline provides ample opportunity for potential applicants to prepare meaningful applications that reflect their personal and academic goals.

In summary, the renewed partnership for the FLEX program underscores the commitment of both the U.S. and Romanian governments to support educational exchanges that enrich the lives of youth and promote a better understanding of diverse cultures. Through such initiatives, both nations aim to cultivate a generation of future leaders equipped with the knowledge and experience necessary to navigate a complex global landscape. As we look forward to the continued success of the FLEX program, it is clear that the impact of these exchanges will resonate well beyond the duration of the students’ time in their host countries, ultimately contributing to stronger international relations and cross-cultural understanding.
