  • I added the outside insulation on the walls of Amidado (Hall of Amidaji) but there is still more to be done 236

This is how Amidado (Amida Hall) looks now.  I’ve made some important steps forward in the construction of Amidaji since my last post on this topic, by adding the thermal insulation on the outside walls of Amidado

  • The best way to solve your problems... 222

The best way to solve your inner problems is not to analyze, trying to find solutions or applying this or that strategy, but to let them go, abandon them, don't focus on them, ignore them and think to them as dream-like and nonexistent. When you try to solve them you actually empower them. However, when you let go of them, they will, sooner or later, dissolve naturally, depending on how successful you are in letting go. The biggest problem of the unenlightened mind is wrong focus. To thin

  • Chanting in the middle of personal chaos... 230

I recite in the middle of my personal chaos and everybody in the Amidado (Amida Hall), recites in the middle of his/her personal chaos. We do not transform this chaos into order or purity, we don’t think at all to purity or negativity, we just recite and the sacred sounds of sutras and Nembutsu come from Amida, carrying us, embracing us, accepting us.

  • How do I feel as a Buddhist?... 228

You don’t need to do anything in order to attain Buddhahood in the Pure Land of Amida. In Jodo Shinshu, Buddhahood is not to be gained or deserved. Unlike other paths outside or inside Buddhism, here the final liberation from birth and death is not to be acquired by you.   You don’t go by yourself to Nirvana, but Amida Buddha takes you by the hand, like a child, and brings you there. He is the One who makes you see the ultimate nature of all things, who melts the many layers of delusions that cover your innate Buddha nature. Once born through the gate of faith in the Pure Land of Amida or His sphere of influence, all these transformations occur instantly and naturally. Your journey in this life as a prisoner in samsara is over onc

  • Four misconceptions concerning the Nembutsu... 232

The four misconceptions concerning the Nembutsu, presented by Master Seikaku in the Essentials of Faith Alone, refers to the wrong understanding of impermanence, bad karma, good karma, and the matter of once calling and many callings of the Name of Amida Buddha. If we wish to understand a certain object we look to its qualities, to the elements that make it up. What are the elements and fundamental qualities of life? A body and mind which are subject to an inexorable cycle of birth, growing, maturity, decay and death.

  • On doubts and fears... 219

Question: “How does the person of Nembutsu, who has received shinjin, deal with the ‘demon’ of doubt that resurfaces after the believer has received and experienced the blessings of true entrusting from Amida Buddha?  As foolish beings, our Saha world minds are prone to delusion and ‘doubt’. That is part of our hopeless condition as bonbu. Perhaps those who have doubt after receiving shinjin are loved all the more by Amida Nyorai, because Amida recognizes the

  • Dharma talks - the new playlist on my youtube channel 284

Since 2020 I've had many online discussions on zoom and other platforms with students and readers from all over the world that prefer this kind of interaction. I also started regular meetings with some of my Sangha members where we discuss various topics and answer to questions together.   As I think that some of the talks might be useful and because many readers said they wanted me to appear more often on Youtube, I've decided to create a new playlist - DHARMA TALKS where I will post fragments from my meetings as well as personal reflections. Please excuse my broken English as it's easier for me to write than to speak. Here is the  link for the playlist:   Please subscribe to my channel and to this playlist so that you can see my new

My Dharma name is Shaku Hogen and I live in Bristol, England. Although I was brought up in the Salvation Army, to be honest, as a boy I had little interest in spiritual matters.  I was a believer in scientific materialist.  But in my late teens I saw a film about Carl Jung’s mystical experiences and heard a radio programme about the Buddha which opened a window in my mind.  My spiritual search began.  This was before the internet, so I read all I c
