When science throws religion and philosophy through the window         Religion and physics two irreducible elements, which many times have been perceived as antagonistic. Religion, at least in the last few decades, has started to make the first steps towards science by accepting more and more of its theories. Science, on the other hand, is getting overtly against any form of religion.           Reputed scientists who believe in religion are quite rare, maybe they are afraid that they’ll be perceived as not serious enough for their domain. For scientists, religion and philosophy are frivolous, they are inexact and unmeasurable. If hundreds of years ago scientists were also philosophers or clergymen, nowadays science has advanced so much and at such a high and sophisticated pace that it has made it impossible for the philosophy to keep the rhythm. There is a huge gap between science and philosophy, science doesn’t seem to want to look back to its common ro

  • “Les Miserables” by Victor Hugo... 302

A wonderful novel that has been popularised especially through the cinema, when starting to read it you already feel at home. You feel safe and comfortable in a narrative that has all the elements to keep you engaged until the end. It has vivacity, it has drama, it has swift changes of events, it has all that is required to keep your mind and breath busy with a wonderful plethora of characters and difficult situations that puts your honest curiosity at test. At my reading style Kindle says 48 hours of reading. Do it, it will be approximately the most pleasant 48 hours in a long time.

  • Robert Kaplan, "In Europe's shadow"... 256

Annoyingly objective, Robert Kaplan describes three different Romania(s) he encountered in his visits in the country in the '80,'90 and 2013.             He creates a charming blend between, history, geopolitics, geography, religiousness and remarkably acute observations. He doesn't judge, is totally unbiased, his observations are realistically crude.             The book is destined mostly to the western readers and probably not to the Romanian themselves, because who would like to see himself in a freshly polished mirror? He goes into the depths of history starting with the formation of the Romanian people until present day politicians, describing medieval historical figures, that probably mean nothing to westerners, but into which Romanians have always taken huge pride.

  • Tim Severin, ”In search of Genghis Khan”... 246

What a great adventure and what courage and stamina you'd need to enterprise such a journey in the harsh and beautiful landscape of Mongolia. Tim Severn and his friend Paul have it all. They have the physical strength to endure riding an extremely long distance, crossing Mongolia from one end to the other (the Silk Road), they also have the stomach to eat 99% of the time only boiled mutton and mare's milk. Most importantly they have the mental strength to put up with one of the most incompetent and arrogant expedition organizer that Mongolia ever had, Ariunbold.                 "In search of Genghis Han" is not only a travel book, but it is also a great adventure which happened in the '90, shortly after the fall of the Soviet Union. Mongolia at that time was still captive in the mentality and soviet social instruments like all the other countries that were part of the Russian Soviet block. People with shallow intelligence, but with strong political relations were pro

  • Ioan Slavici, "Mara"... 275
