Essays are among the 3 major categories of academic writing recognized by the American Academy of Writing. An essay is, generally speaking, a literary piece that present the author’s debate, but the exact definition is very vague, often overlapping with that of a personal letter, a paper, an guide, writing service pamphlet, and even a short story. Essays are historically always formal and are nearly never informal. The only place for an essay to go off the beaten path is in the middle, where it can be equally highly formal and thoroughly informal–but, again, this has shifted somewhat. Conventional essays nevertheless require the author state her or his view, expound upon that opinion in great detail, clarify a specific situation, discuss study, point out some flaws in the work (or the writer’s work) and finish with a summary of the paper.
