So in search for some shark movies, i stumbled upon “Open water”. And due to the fact that it has also a sequel, i said ok to both of them.
So, “Open water 1”:
The movie has a visual that will (maybe) hurt your eyes, due to the fact that it`s shot in realistic mode and it`s based on a true story.
There are many cases in which people who go scuba diving are left behind by the boat that took them. This is what happened to the two protagonists in the movie.
Now, when you find yourself in the water there are three real-life possible causes of death: dehydration, shark attack and hypothermia.
In the movie the guys where left behind around noon, and the girl in the end survived until the next day, so the real-life approach was quite ok – it gets extra points for that.
Now the couple when they found out that they were left behind, they sat put, but the current took them away (God knows where). The movie introduces sharks, but not the aggressive type, due to the fact that the water was swarming at one point with sharks but none of them attacked them, like we are accustomed in Jaws, Shallow and so on… In the end we can barely see that after the guy dies from “who knows” (he was wounded, not eaten, he had consumed his energy with the swimming and yelling), the girl pushes the dead guy`s body away from her, then some sharks come and eat him, and after that, only when she sees that there are a lot of sharks around her and she accepts the fact that she will not be rescued, she goes under the water to meet her gruesome death.
Now from the beginning the whole organizational scheme on the boat was stupid. Like, you take around 20 people on your boat (counted badly), they go in the water and when some of them come back you just count and you say whatever, let`s go back? First of all, a table with all the people names should have been printed, and when they went on the boat everybody should sign. When they come out of the water their names should have been yelled out and only after everyone was counted, you can leave.
Ok, not everything goes by the book. But you“re fucking dealing with people`s lives!!!
Anyway….next to “Open water 2: Adrift”:
This movie is the perfect example of human stupidity and strengthens the fact that people can act like they are 16 even if they are grown-ups…Stupid people.
Two couples and a family of three goes on a yacht in the open water and decides to go and have a swim. The baby girl remains on the boat with the mother and one of the guys. The guy tries to play a joke of the mother, that clearly shows signs of being afraid of the water, and lifts her in his arm and dive in the water. A childish joke.
After everyone is in the water and they are tired of swimming and having fun, they realize that they didn`t left the ladder opened. D`oooh! Stupid people.
So the movie it`s about them trying to get on board, complaining, crying, yelling at each other, taking their clothes off in order to make a rope and not succeeding getting on.
Some of them die, and guess what! The last two that went into the water remain at the end of the movie alive! Well…until the end that is…
So the guy manages to get the mother on board, she lets the ladder down for the guy to get on board and the ran to the baby. After like 20 minutes with the baby she goes outside to see why the guy didn`t show up. And she saw that he never did get back on the boat…she sees him in the distance and throws the life buoy. He doesn`t respond to her callings and she decides to get back in the water.
All the movie action takes place from morning until the next day.
And, the yacht in the morning was found by a fishing boat that heard the baby yelling and no one on board.
Now why the hell the mother didn`t get the guy back on the boat, we`ll never know…
After seeing these and looking back on what i searched, i can`t relate them to shark movie. I mean, ok, open waters, a change of being shark bate, but still. I didn`t ask to see human error and stupidity.
But then again, these are great movies that can show you “what might happen” if you are not organized and hang out with stupid people.
