Icoanele sunt rare în Catedrala Sf. Paul din
Londra.
De fapt, sunt doar patru icoane, doua strajuind intrarea
principala, iar alte doua - altarul.
Toate cele patru icoane sunt însotite de scurte
notite.
"Icon of the Virgin and Child - This icon is of Mary the
mother of Jesus, with Jesus in her arms, resting his cheek on
hers.
It speaks of the tender love between mother and
child.
The letters on the icon are Greek capitals. They are
abbreviations of Greek words which mean
'Mother of God' and 'Jesus Christ'."
"Icon of Christ - This icon is of Jesus Christ and shows
him after his death and resurrection
as ruler of the world.
The letters either side of Jesus mean 'Jesus
Christ';
the letters arround his head mean 'He who is'."
De o parte si de alta a altarului, se afla icoana Sf. Meletie,
primul episcop al Londrei, si cea a Sf. Paul.
"Icon of St Mellitus - St Mellitus became the first Bishop
of London in 604 AD.
During his time as Bishop, the first Cathedral in London
was built on this site."
Prima catedrala a Londrei, cea în care a slujit Sf Meletie,
era construita din lemn.
Distrusa într-un incendiu, a fost reconstruita între 675 si
685 din piatra.
Aceasta a doua catedrala a fost distrusa de vikingi si a fost
reconstruita în 962.
Dupa incendiul din 1087, începe constructia celei de a patra
catedrale, numita "vechiul Sf. Paul".
Dupa marele incendiu al Londrei din 1666, constructia celei de
a cincea catedrale
a fost încredintata lui Christopher Wren (1632 - 1723).
"Icon of St Paul - This Cathedral is named after St Paul.
He was an apostle in the 1st Century AD
and travelled widely sharing the Good News of
Jesus.
Many of his letters are in the Bible."
Doar cel de al treilea proiect propus de Christopher Wren a fost aprobat.
Prima piatra a noii constructii a fost pusa pe 21 iunie 1675.
Ultima piatra a fost pusa 35 de ani mai târziu, în 1710.
Christopher Wren a mai trait înca 13 ani dupa terminarea
Catedralei Sf Paul.
Este înmormântat în catedrala, sub o simpla placa de marmura,
fara nici un monument.
Deasupra mormântului, pe zid, o inscriptie sfatuieste:
Lector, si monumentum requiris,
circumspice.
"Cititorule, daca tu cauti monumentul, priveste în jurul
tau."
PS Cum o calatorie la Londra pentru a vizita St Paul's
Cathedral
